During the "rut," male whitetail deer show aggression toward one another. They engage in battles for dominance, with the larger, stronger, and more mature males winning the right to mate. ​“Champion” depicts two whitetail deer after a fierce fight during the rut. The buck in the distance looks back in defeat, as the stronger male stands proudly.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
